We Were Drifters

When Travis and I were in college,
we found this white string with the word 'Drifters'
written in black ink over and over along its ribbed edge.

Travis and I on a Hawaiian cruise after college graduation, 2005.

And we decided right there and then,
we liked the sound of being drifters,
so we cut that string in half,
and tied it 'round each one of our wrists.

It was a reminder to us to get out and see the world,
and that we were in this together.

It came with us on trips.
And even when we weren't on vacation, we were still drifters at heart,
eyeing the map for the next place to visit. The next adventure.
The next time to see the world with fresh eyes.

And even though we wore these self made
bracelets for only a few months at best,
it's always been a nice memory.

And we've really tried to live up to this mentality over the years.
To get out. To do things.
To enjoy that which is at our very fingertips.

Last weekend we went with some friends
to Laughlin and spent some time
on that beautiful Colorado river.

We went for rides in a speedboat.

We cruised pontoon boat style.

We floated on river rafts.

Seriously, I could get used to this.

And we had so much fun.

There is something so fresh about
dipping your feet into the river's edge,
and pushing your toes into the sand
as the water rushes across your skin.

The feeling of the wind blowing your hair back,
and sometimes blowing the hat right off your head.

The initial shock of jumping into the icy cold
Colorado after baking in the warm, dry heat.

(I admit, I let out a squeaky scream the first time I jumped in.)

The glorious sensation of floating,
as the current takes you down river.

And as you are bobbing there,
each ripple reaching through your fingers,
there is heightened sense of self.
Of where you were, and where you are going.

When I looked around at our friends,
some old, some new,
we were all smiles.
Painted with freshly sunkissed skin.
Touched by the light, the sand, the water...
and each other.

We ate. We drank.
We swam.
We ran out of gas.

And the gas station was closed. Whoops!

 But it all worked out.

Because for that moment, we were invinsible.
And as the crisp sun shone down on us,
we were the perfect color of happiness.
And nothing could change that.

Thanks to a great group of friends.
We had a awesome time drifting with you.

Until next time...

Oh, and cheers to a Happy 30th Birthday Steve!!

Seis de Mayo

This year Travis and I didn't spend Cinco de Mayo
cooking up carne asada and drinking cervezas.

¡Salud!

Instead we helped move Travis' sister and her family into their new home.
It's a lovely home, and we are very excited to have a pool back in the family.
But needless to say, by the end of the day,
we were all pretty exhausted.

So we decided Sunday, Seis de Mayo, would be our day to relax.
Aside from doing laundry and a little grocery shopping,
Travis and I spent the day doing the simple things we love.

Like sleeping in.
(...until 9:30!! Gasp!)

I took the dogs for a nice, long run through the neighborhood nature trail.

T'was a lovely day for a run.

Afterwards I spent some time hanging
out with them in our backyard.

Guinness and Raja enjoyed their new frozen bone toy.

I read a book and soaked in the sun.

I laid on my picnic blanket,
& they stepped on me a few hundred times
while they chased each other around.
(I get no respect around here.)

Nope. Not when it comes to puppy play time.

I watered our plants and got excited that all
of our flowers are coming along quite nicely.
Fresh new blooms in Spring really make me happy.

Hydrangeas are a fav of mine.
These started as centerpieces for my bridal shower.
3.5 years later, they are flourishing!

Later, I painted my nails.
(One of my favorite passtimes.)

Ooh la la!
We watched the Dodgers lose to the Cubs in the 11th inning.

(LAME! Guerra you're killing us! )

And then watched the Lakers beat the Nuggets by four points.

(PHEW!)

And inbetween the games we made a pretty tasty dinner.

Crabcakes. Salad. And corn on the cobb.

This was the farthest you could get from Mexican cuisine,
but Seis de Mayo is less traditional than it's Cinco counterpart.

I chopped the veggies while Travis mixed together the readily made ingredients.
And while he fried up the cakes, I made our favorite salad.
(Lettuce, almonds, cranberries, feta cheese & Linn's Ollieberrry salad dressing.)
YUM!

We cooked the corn on the cobb,
& poured two glasses of our favorite chilled Sweet Red wine.

And voila! Dinner for two!

I admit the portion sizes were entirely too generous.
But it's the holidays... and holidays = fat kid status.

Bon Appetit, en espaƱol! :-P

It was a delicious dinner, and a nice end to a hard working weekend.

Although our Cinco de Mayo was celebrated a day late,
and totally untraditional in all regards,
it didn't really matter.
Because holidays are all about enjoying good company
and taking some time to relax and unwind.
And we did just that.

Happy Seis de Mayo!

¡Ariba!
